If AI Can Read Tarot, Why Do We Still Need Human Tarot Readers?
The first time I experimented with an AI Tarot reading, I had an uncomfortable thought: this is surprisingly good. The cards were interpreted accurately. The language was warm and personal. Some observations felt almost uncannily relevant. And for a moment, I understood why people might wonder: If AI can pull cards, interpret them, and give me a reading in seconds, why would I need a human Tarot reader? It is a question I believe every Tarot reader should be asking—not resisting.
The world of Tarot is shifting. AI is changing how people learn the cards, access readings, and understand what a Tarot reader can offer. Pretending otherwise won’t protect the profession. In fact, I believe engaging with this change can raise the standard of Tarot reading. Let me give you an example. A client once came to me asking, “Will I get the promotion I want?”
We could have simply looked at the cards for a yes or no. But as she spoke, something else emerged. She wasn’t really worried about the promotion. She was exhausted. She had spent years proving herself in a workplace where she didn’t feel valued. So I asked her, “If you got the promotion tomorrow, would you actually be happy?” She went silent. Then she laughed and said,“Honestly? No.” That moment became more important than the prediction. And that is the distinction I see becoming increasingly important in the age of AI. AI can recognise patterns. It can explain symbolism. It can offer possibilities and, sometimes, remarkably convincing validation. But validation isn’t the same as insight. A great human Tarot reader isn’t merely translating pictures on cards. They are listening—to your words, your pauses, your contradictions, your emotions and sometimes even to what you’re avoiding saying. They know when to ask another question. When to challenge you. When to say, “I don’t think that’s what you’re really asking.” And when simply to sit with you in uncertainty. Perhaps AI isn’t making human Tarot readers less relevant. Perhaps it is showing us exactly where our real value lies.
