Tarot vs Oracle: What’s the Difference?

by | Jul 7, 2025

“Are Tarot and Oracle cards the same?” That’s one of the questions I get asked most as a Tarot reader. And I get it—the shelves are bursting with beautiful decks, all promising insight, guidance, and maybe even a little magic. However, while both tarot cards and oracle cards are used for divination, they are quite different in style, structure, and even personality.

Let’s start with Tarot. It’s the more structured of the two. A traditional Tarot deck has 78 cards—22 Major Arcana (The Fool, The Lovers, Death, The World) and 56 Minor Arcana cards divided into four suits: Cups, Pentacles, Wands, and Swords. These cards follow a consistent framework, and each has a specific meaning. Whether you pick up a Rider-Waite deck or the Muse Tarot deck, the symbolism remains the same. Tarot is like the wise professor—it gives detailed answers, reveals patterns, and loves a good storyline. Tarot has your back if you want to understand the “why” behind a situation or see the journey ahead.

Now let’s meet Oracle cards—Tarot’s free-spirited cousin. There are no rules here. An Oracle deck can have 10 cards or 100. It can be themed around angels, affirmations, animals, chakras—you name it. Each deck is unique, and so are the messages. Oracle cards are perfect when you need gentle guidance, daily inspiration, or a quick intuitive nudge. They often speak in affirmations or big-picture themes like “Trust,” “Abundance,” or “Let Go.”

So, which is better? Honestly—neither! It’s not Tarot versus Oracle, it’s Tarot and Oracle. I often use both in my readings. Tarot gives me the plot; Oracle gives me the vibe.

If you’re new to card reading, I suggest starting with a simple 3-card Tarot spread and pairing it with a single Oracle card for clarity. Trust your intuition to guide you to the deck that “calls” you. Some days, it’ll be the logical, layered depth of Tarot. Other days, it’ll be the whispers of Oracle.

My dear readers, no matter which you choose, Tarot or Oracle—remember, the magic isn’t in the cards. Its in you.

Tarot tells the story; Oracle whispers the wisdom.” – Anonymous
